How can we use mapping as a community resource and process? The first laboratory on collaborative mapping will be dedicated to a survey on available projects, software and digital infrastructures. We will select and set up a suitable platform to run a mapping exercise about the Südliche Friedrichstadt. 25.11.2016 / 3.12.2016 - Kassel : Mapping the good life A mapping workshop will take place in Kassel on November 25th, organised in the context of Transformap by Transition Town Kassel <http://ttkassel.de>, Ecobytes <https://ecobytes.net> and the Dokutopia <http://www.docutopia.de/> parallel initiative around next years /documenta/. Taskforce for dissemination of the alternative economies on Wikipedia and Wikidata @alabaye invites us for an orchestrated effort to disseminate concepts and projects on Wikipedia and “to dream about a Wikipedia article series on alternative economies”. Their aims, interests and activities currently touch TransforMap narrates in multiple places, i.e. by browsing the Mapping of Mappings for possible travel routes or by consciously engaging in a tempospatial self-organisation process with the /yunity contributors map/. Several other developments made the experience of this maps atlas more pleasant. A first meeting to build a core group that moves forward with the project is being planned for the Winter. In perspective is a large Mapping Festival in Summer 2017, where massive mapping of a specific region can take place. Value Flows and Yunity The Value Flows project is progressively continuing with modeling their ontologies for Network Resource Planning. A main partner are the well known Mutual Aid Networks <https://discourse.transformap.co/t/madison-wi-mutual-aid-network-mapping-su…>. A technical demonstration of this collaboration lives at http://locecon.org/. Recently we were looking together at the current entry points for the Transformap community's vocabulary work, the Wikibase <https://base.transformap.co> and the associated query interface. Nearing a 1.0 release of the Value Flows ontology and knowing the prospects of the Yunity project, we are now bringing them closer: Yunity strives for offer and request matching and is building a sophisticated platform, while Value Flows provide a stable foundational data structure. Berlin community wellbeing dinner On November 9th, the #communities:berlin <https://discourse.transformap.co/c/communities/berlin/17> are inviting to a dinner at the Thinkfarm Berlin <http://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/5544775> for sustaining our mutual wellbeing and mapping interests. Tech RDF support for automatic generation of taxonomies as Linked Open Data We finally managed to setup the Blazegraph database as RDF interface to our taxonomies!With this, we reached a major milestone: to have a database where we can create interlinked taxonomies and serve them as RDF (see the respective community story <https://tree.taiga.io/project/transformap/us/154> for more details). It is now used to serve the translations of the (currently only) SSEDAS taxonomy in the TransforMap Viewer in 15 different languages <http://viewer.transformap.co/#5/51.166/10.451>. A guide on how to add your personal taxonomy will be provided in the next weeks. Translation system now available A translation system for Transformap now in place. Weblate <https://weblate.transformap.co> provides a facility for the translation of the user interface, and allows any user to contribute to the translation of any non-taxonomy parts of the Transformap Viewer. Map editor The work for setting up a Map Editor for Transformap has started. The technical team has decided to use Karte von Morgen's editor <https://github.com/transformaps/kartevonmorgen>, in conjunction with Transformap's own API <https://github.com/TransforMap/transformap-api>. Follow and contribute to the development on our Taiga community story <https://tree.taiga.io/project/transformap/us/27>. Research Article project: collaboratively mapping alternative economies Adrien Labaeye (@alabaeye <https://discourse.transformap.co/users/alabaeye>) is preparing a peer review journal article entitled "Collaboratively mapping alternative economies", where he proposes a three-pronged typology to help navigate the diversity of mappings initiatives in the field of alternative economies. Adrien is very much looking forward to gather feeback from people who have been involved in the practice of collaboratively mapping alternative economies. CfP: Geographies of Degrowth On the bridge between geographical research and theory of degrowth, the American Assocation of Geographers has launched a call for papers for its' meeting in April 2017 in Boston. Thanks to this fund, we achieved major milestones and were able to prototype - and in some cases even beyond - a series of tools and deployments that form the core of the Transformap infrastructure. Our final report, redacted by Get Active, has already been approved by the consortium coordinators. Ecobytes and Get Active have now to provide the final cost claims in order to receive the last chunk of funding. Application to Prototype Fund of the Open Knowledge Foundation As part of the efforts to stablise and extend the commons infrastructure which provisions Transformap, Jon Richter @almereyda <https://discourse.transformap.co/users/almereyda>) has submitted an application to the OKF Prototype Fund <https://www.bmbf.de/foerderungen/bekanntmachung-1225.html>, funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research. Have a good read! ------------------------------ Community Update on call for proposal The call for proposal received until now 6 proposals! Still only two persons have shown interest in being part of the decision process in allocating funds. To make it really a community process, please take part in it by writing to me or writing on the thread on the forum. To allow for enough time, the call is extended until Sunday 17th midnight, don't feel shy and take part in the process of deciding how the money is allocated - this will take place from Monday 18th till Wednesday 20th without requiring participation in a meeting. Call for mini-proposals (buckets) from the community

Dear Transformap contributors and friends, 2000€ have been set aside to fund the community in contributing to the wider Transformap vision (i.e. related to mapping alternatives). We aim in priority at funding activities that will strengthen the community and the wider ecosystem. Primarily non-technical activities are encouraged. The way we'll do it is an experiment to distribute decision-making in the community, so please take part! Summary Proposals for activities to be funded that contribute to the topic of mapping alternatives can be submitted by anyone. Any person that has been active in the Transformap community will be entitled to take part in the decision making process as long as they make the request by 15th of July. The decision making process will happen over three days (16th till 18th of July midnight ECT) during which you can ask for direct support by contacting me (Adrien). When? - Deadline for submission of proposals is 15th of July. - From 16th till 18th (23:59 ECT) of July the proposals are collectively reviewed and funded. - Activities to be funded need to happen before the end of September 2016. Who can submit a proposal? Anyone. Really, anyone. You can also start a proposal even if you are not the one to implement (in that case you should have secured one or more person who are ready to implement that proposal by the end of the submission period). How to submit a proposal? Start a discussion on this forum in this Forum category <https://discourse.transformap.co/c/communities/community-buckets> with the title 'Community bucket proposal: [your short title]'. Describe the content and impact of the activities envisioned. Make an estimation of the budget you'll need. Small budgets (below 500€) are encouraged. And link you proposal in this discussion thread <https://discourse.transformap.co/t/call-for-proposal-funding-the-community-…> so everybody can hear of it! How will we decide on the proposals? Best, Adrien for the Transformap core team. ------------------------------ Community Call for community proposals to be funded We have set 2000€ aside for the wider community to propose small activities to be funded. We are aiming at funding 4/5 buckets between 400-500€ each. Smaller or bigger proposals are also welcome. We are inviting anyone wishing to fund activities that will contribute to the Transformap vision to write start a thread on our forum here . All proposals will be reviewed by anyone in the community who expressed the wish to do it - this will be an experiment to open radically the decision-making, and hopefully paving the way to a more participative Transformap. We would be happy to meet you there! ------------------------------ Tech Transformap's Wikibase for maps' taxonomies The Transformap Wikibase <https://base.transformap.co/wiki/Main_Page> is an interface based on the "Wikibase" plugin for Mediawiki that allows to store taxonomies and create connections between each elements of them. For example: 'community garden' is in the taxonomy of two different maps, those elements can be linked. This will be the base for merging different maps. It paves the way towards a systematic and machine readable documentation of maps' taxonomies, mirroring the way wiki.transformaps.net list all the maps of alternatives. A guide to create a new taxonomy can be found here <https://base.transformap.co/wiki/HowtoAddTaxonomy>. Proposal for ETL by James Lewis being reviewed The ETL (Extract-Transform-Load) component is a key piece of the infrastructure Transformap is putting together. It allow the extraction of data from a map, its transformation along a common standard, and the loadin of the data to our API (which then can feed any map or app with data). James has extensive experience in building a similar technical component. He produced for us a proposal as the basis of his coming work. We are currently reviewing it with him to set the basis of his work. More to follow soon! ------------------------------ Project Management CHEST We are coming to the end of an unusual complicated bureaucratic process with the CHEST consortium that has been fully independent of our will. We are waiting for money to be released and having some liquidity difficulty. We have oral agreement that we can extend the funded operations until the end of September and are waiting for a written confirmation. In the mean time, work is going ahead. With over 300 participants, the third Map Jam organized by Shareable was successful and will be reconducted in June and October. As part of an effort to downscale the local conference and massively disseminate it, a call for a global degrowth week of events parallel to the conference will be issue soon. Within an existing Drupal platform used by the degrowth network <https://co-munity.net/degrowth>, we are extending the existing event publishing feature. The first step was getting rid of the proprietary Google geocoder and replacing it with Mapzen, so that geocoded data on events can be used without restrictions <https://www.drupal.org/node/2722713>. This represent one more step in getting open geodata, this one on venue locations of the alternative economy, which will eventually feed the Transformap ecosystem. Tech First draft of Transformap's map vizualization tool A first mockup (visual draft) for the map is ready: https://media.taiga.io/attachments/8/2/3/d/511b30cd70f8eca801c04e83bfc2a7f4…. The focus is on allowing users to choose their filters to customize what they view on the map. The mockup is just a first rough visualization, and questions / feedback is very welcome. The current interface will focus on the englishspeaking implementation, meanwhile (with the above mentioned Wikibase) we prepare the translation process. Setting Transformap's Wikibase as our ontology server We are working to set up a Wikibase (clone of Wikidata) to act as our ontology server (so categories from various existing maps can used). At first, it will be used to host the SSEDAS filters, and then the TransforMap and many other taxonomies later. This Wikibase instance will also be used as the media server (images, texts). The upload of images does already work and is used in the SSEDAS maps development. SSEDAS taxonomy development On 24th May during the next SSEDAS Steering committee meeting the current draft of the 1st iteration will be approved to be implemented in the SSEDAS "SUSY-map".
